Community Impact: Alex, a Community Leader
About the Program
At Citadel Securities, we encourage our team members to serve their communities as civic leaders. The Community Leaders program enables this support by providing our colleagues with concierge nonprofit board matching, governance training and cash grants.
How Alex and First Tech Fund Help Open Doors for the Next Generation
As a member of Citadel’s Core Engineering team, Alex applies the same focus and drive from his professional role to his position on the Board of Directors of First Tech Fund, a nonprofit serving the New York City area. Its mission, to provide technical training, mentorship and paid career opportunities for under-resourced students, resonates deeply with him.
First Tech Fund identifies high-performing students and connects them with mentorship, professional development, and real-world learning opportunities. Its nimble structure gives board members like Alex the ability to make a tangible impact. Alex joined the board in April 2025 through Citadel’s Community Leaders program, which connects employees with nonprofit boards aligned to their interests and expertise. Although he has volunteered for years with similar organizations, this marks his first formal board position, where he offers strategic advice, fundraising support and his extensive expertise in technology and leadership.
His passion for volunteerism stretches back more than a decade. After moving to the U.S. from the U.K., Alex began mentoring through StreetWise Partners, an organization that helps talented individuals from underserved communities launch professional careers. Over the years, he has worked with various organizations to teach resume writing, interview skills and networking, what Alex calls “the invisible keys to opportunity.”
“Hiring is difficult, and most organizations tend to recruit from familiar institutions. That leaves out many capable people who just need access and guidance,” Alex explains. “Programs like First Tech Fund help level that playing field.” That belief in expanding access to opportunity drives Alex’s unwavering commitment to civic engagement.
Alex also encourages colleagues to follow his lead. “Even if you’re early in your career, your experience is valuable. Your insight can make a huge difference for someone trying to take their first step forward.”Through First Tech Fund and the Community Leaders program, Alex is helping ensure that the next generation of technologists and professionals has the tools, confidence and connections to thrive, one student at a time.
