Winners Announced in Education Technology Competition Sponsored by Ken Griffin, Citadel, Citadel Securities

Winners have been announced in the Tools Competition for 2022-2023, which was convened in 2020 by Citadel Founder and CEO Ken Griffin and Schmidt Futures to accelerate pandemic-related learning recovery. Now in its third year, the competition was supported by Schmidt Futures; Kenneth C. Griffin, Citadel, and Citadel Securities; the Walton Family Foundation; the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation; and AlleyCorp. The competition yielded 32 winning teams from 12 countries, being awarded more than $4 million to develop and expand their tools, which are estimated to impact 35 million learners by 2026.

The Tools Competition is one of the largest edtech competitions in the world. It aims to grow the field of learning engineering by spurring edtech innovations dedicated to leveraging big data to support learning science research and the needs of learners worldwide.

Since launching in 2020, the Tools Competition has awarded nearly $10 million to 80 edtech innovators. This year’s competition generated more than 1,000 proposals from 73 countries, with the 32 winners hailing from institutions and organizations across North America, Europe, Asia, South America, the Middle East and Africa. Their proposals address a range of learning goals— from improving math and reading proficiency to bolstering students’ problem-solving and social-emotional skills.
