How Alex DiLeonardo Supports Miami City Ballet’s National Reach
Alex DiLeonardo, Chief People Officer at Citadel Securities, has always been drawn to the arts. Raised in a creative household, he grew up around design and the visual arts and remained engaged with cultural institutions through college, including leading the junior board of the Andy Warhol Museum while studying at Carnegie Mellon University. That background ultimately led him to Miami City Ballet, where he serves on the Board of Directors.
For Alex, Miami City Ballet is compelling because it operates at a national level while remaining deeply rooted in the city it represents. “Miami has a rich and diverse arts landscape,” he says. “Miami City Ballet stood out to me because it was already so well established on the national and international stage; I saw it as an immediate and high-leverage way to influence how residents and visitors experience our great city and South Florida’s overall attractiveness.”
Founded in 1985, Miami City Ballet has grown alongside Miami’s arts scene and built a global reputation for artistic excellence. Widely acclaimed as a national leader in dance, the company performs regularly in Miami and tours nationally and internationally. It also operates a professional ballet academy that attracts students from around the world.
Alex joined the board in late 2023. He now chairs the development and campaign committees, which are responsible for the organization’s fundraising and long-term financial support, and serves on the talent and compensation committee, a combined committee focused on leadership and pay oversight. In that role, he helps guide senior leadership searches, including the appointment of a new creative director, drawing on his experience as the firm’s Chief People Officer.
His approach to board service reflects how he thinks about leadership more broadly. “Nonprofit boards give people the chance to take on real responsibility earlier than they often would in their careers,” Alex says. “It allows you to apply your skills in a different setting and build leadership experience that carries back into your professional life.”
Alex credits Citadel Securities’ Community Leaders program with helping to make that engagement possible. By connecting employees with organizations aligned to their interests and experience, the program lowers barriers to meaningful board service. “When people bring their skills and perspective to organizations they care about, it strengthens not just the institution but the city around it,” he says.
